Cat Coat Colors and Patterns

One thing that make cats so pretty and unique is their color, cat can have single color, or more variation with pretty pattern that also unique; one more thing that really make cat amazing is that their color determine their general personality, for example, black cats is generally more introvert then other cat; white cat generally more elegant (they know they pretty), and white cat with blue eyes have 60% chance to be deaf.

Here is main cat color : White, black, red (ginger), cream, brown, cinnamon, fawn

Here is main cat pattern : Solid (single color), Bi-color, Tabby, Tortoiseshell, Tri-color / Calico, Color point.

SOLID / SELF-COLOR

This is the easiest to recognize color type, the cat basically will have only one color in the whole fur, there is no single spot on them. The most common color is black or white.


BI-COLOR

Bi-color is when a cat has a white coat with other color, it can be black or even tabby; there can be many variation of color. This coat is caused by the white spotting gene. You will sometime hear bi-color cats being referred to magpie (random spotting), harlequin (random spotting with color tail), cap (colored head), saddle (and saddle on the back), and van (color between ears and tail).


TABBY

Tabby is the most common coat for cat around the world. Its cat with stripes with many color variation, there are 4 variation of a tabby. A stripe tabby / mackerel tabby (when tabby cat have stripe from spine to belly), classic tabby / blotched tabby (when its a swirly pattern, creating marble effect), spotted tabby (tabby with spot pattern), and ticked tabby (when tabby cat, with only color without stripe; so it appear like tick / dot. Sometime has stripe on tail or leg).


TORTOISESHELL

This coat have red (ginger) and black color. The coat pattern is mainly seen females. Tortoiseshell can also be vary from brindled, where the two color are well mixed, to having distinct patches. You can get a mixture of a tabby and tortoiseshell, also known as "torbie"


TRI-COLOR / CALICO

This color pattern consist of black, red (ginger) and white. Just like tortoiseshell, a calico cat can be diluted, showing grey, cream and white patches.


COLOR POINT

This color pattern is when a cat have darker color at their face, paws and tail. This is thought to be caused by a gene that causes the coolest part of the cat's body to become darker in color. A color point cat is born without the distinct darker marking, but develops them as they grow. A scientific experiment show that if you keep colorpoint kitten in warm room, the darker marking would not develop.
